LiterateHiker asked about all the new words doming into play in our language (and probably others as well) and here is another ne to add to the list. It's called "assortative mating" (https://www.brookings.edu/blog/social-mobility-memos/2014/02/10/opposites-dont-attract-assortative-mating-and-social-mobility/). This exponential rise in vocabulary is brought to us thanks to the wonders of the internet.
It is said that the last time this sort of selective process was prevalent was in the 20's (before the crash). Out of all the people in New York who apply only 20-30% are accepted.
By special people I'm assuming they are not referring to people who ride the short bus?
Wow! read the article -there's several minutes of wasted time I'll never get back.
I've never liked elitists - just seems sad.
To some, especially those worse off than us, we are elitist. Everything is relative.
I'm just gonna say this one word:
ELITISM
Isn't the term where you live, "Landed Gentry"?
I'm thinking of someone who posts on this site (not you) who likes to gush about a certain type of person, because they're engaged in university study or literature. The inference being, those who are not doing the same are wanting in some way.
The vulgar scent of elitism is undeniable.
For me, a person I admire and respect most in the world just happens to be a friend of mine who is also unemployed. He has the shame of being degreeless. But he's honest and kind to a fault, which is worth more than most things in life.
@Ellatynemouth I don't know about where you live but here there are many people who put stickers on their cars about their kids being an honor student, or doctor or whatever. I saw a joke that showed a car with a bumper sticker that read "Our genius techie kid is hacking your bank account while you read this".
Crikey. Narcissism has been given the green light.
This information came in the Atlantic Monthly. It is long and I have not finished yet BUT it is a shocker and is a sign of the times. It is basically about polarization of the 9.9% of the upper financial echalon from the other 90% of the country's population. My late partners son and his wife are both doctors with 3 kids and we have had this conversation with them. It is real. [theatlantic.com]
One has to feel rather sorry for these people as theres is absolutely nothing special about them more than there is something up their butts that needs to be removed and that is going to be very painful for them.
Unfortunately, as the article states (I made another comment with the source) this has been going on for a long time. It is the average person that suffers. The article clearly shows that.
I'd offer that this is just using the current technology and personal data (LinkedIn) to support and reinforce class distinction. We tend to marry into our cultural and economic peer group.
Exactly what the Atlantic article said. I added an additional comment with the link to the article. This has been going on for a long time and is not new.
