Please tell me your favorite name for both sexes.
I'd be interested on learning why it's your favorite, if you have reasons.
My favorites are...
Another thing comes to mind. What are your thoughts on ethnic names and those who opt to Americanize them. Many of my former Chinese coworkers chose an anglo version of their name, but most of the Indian and Arabic ones did not. I always liked for them to go with their own preferences. There were a few that took me awhile to get the pronunciation right. Another coworker had to correct me for my sloppy pronunciation of his name. Yohan (rhymes with wand not hand).
Finally, and along somewhat similar lines, what do you all think of the trend of names that go to extreme of spelling or other irregularities? Many are the butt of jokes for being too "ghetto." Again, I think personal choice pretty much trumps all, but there are some names it seems unfortunate to saddle a child with, though if they become famous, the uniqueness is often seen as a plus. Oprah's name was supposedly a misspelling of the biblical name Orpah.
This talks about that.
From the article.
And this.
i don't believe I honestly have any "favorites", tho I'm not a big fan of Donald ATM!!!
1.Sarah
2.Connor
@Donotbelieve That's just a coincidence. Sarah was the name of my first crush. I liked that name before I met her. Sarah smile is one of my all time favorite ballads. Connor is a proper Celtic name which is my ancestry. I gave that name to my youngest son. Best wishes for you, the baby, and your family. What is your short list on a boy's name?
@Donotbelieve good catch there
@Donotbelieve Both names are ancient!
Sara is a great name!! ??
@Sara72712 You got that right! Hi Sara!
My mom's first name was Zora, I always loved that. If I'd have had my way one of my sons middle names would have been Thaddeus. I'm not sure why but I always loved that name.
Well you picked my name so you gotta like that! ?? Otherwise I've always liked Samantha.
@Donotbelieve Sorry, no it's Allen.
@Donotbelieve You're very sweet!
I like mine. From the Germanic "Wilhelm" meaning protector
For a girl, Valerie. Like the sound, though it's not my favorite Monkees song.
@Donotbelieve - Thank you. My dad said he was almost going to go with Edward, but I'm glad I got William (not that there's anything wrong with Edward).
A girl in high school gave me the nickname Billy Chuck to be cute (Billy Jack was all the rage at the time).
The feminine form of my name is pretty awful. Wilma or Wilhelmina (no offense to any woman with thst name), though Wilma Flinstone was a babe. I also wanted to yabba-dabba-do Betty. ?
When I lived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in the late 1960s, I loved the name of one of my elite neighbors- "Benji." She lived near some family friends.
Later, in 1973, when I acquired a border collie puppy, I remembered the cool name and named her "Benji." I was proud of that unique name.
A few months later, the movie "Benji" came out, and from then on, instead of exclaiming in admiration at my dog's interesting name, people would say, "Oh..you named her after the dog in the movie!"
I was furious.
Ben and Klaus for a man
Nicola and Rose for women
Melita is my given name and formerly a Greek island now known as Malta. My favorite because of the history it led me to exploring when I discovered it...the bible.
Preston for a male because it sounds dignified to me.
Mikhail (the Russian or Jewish pronunciations)
Gaia
Alternatively, Ibrahim for a boy
I like the sounds of Arabic and Eastern languages and names. I don't know why I like Gaia, other than the way it sounds. And I like the nicknames for all of them.
@Donotbelieve curiosity piqued...
@Donotbelieve Isaiah... I do like it. Ibrahim Isaiah... Too many "i"s?
I think my online nom de plume is pretty cool. LanceThruster. I like the double entendre, but it was meant to be reminiscent of Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and the like (Buzz Lightyear came later). I came up with it around 1981 or so. There's even a Fairly Oddparents character by that name (also came after my debut). It's part of the Crash Nebula cartoon within a cartoon. My political content on Facebook is on my LanceThruster page.
People I'd debate with online said it sounded like a gay porn star (not that there's anything wrong with that). I said they must be projecting because it works just as well for a straight actor. And then I'd ask if they were hiring. ?
I used Jenairien as a character name in several games. It kind of grew on me and became Jenarien. It was a joke at first. I couldn't think of anything to use. "Je n'ai rien." Is French for I have nothing.
For a girl's name, I like Reyna. It was the name of someone I thought of as a sister, and it means queen.
Jane: simple, sounds common, but is extremely uncommon.
Trevor: I just like the way it sounds.
1 Roxanne
2 David
@Donotbelieve of course and David?
@Donotbelieve I just keep hearing a Police song in my head when I hear that name. I couldn't name my daughter that.
Roxanne [g.co]
@JimG who said my daughter????
@Bigwavedave Dave, please note to whom my reply was directed. No offense.
@Donotbelieve ohhhhhhhh daughter names are different....I wanted to name my daughter morgan or montana... my wife wouldnt have it. We named her jordan elizabeth
@JimG oh np
Good question btw. Makes me think of all the ones I didn't pick that I like a lot. Anthony, Glenda, Cosmo, Wanda...
Toni is a cool girl's name too.
I also like many of those unique names that can be for male or female. Some are surprising to be used for both (Often with a variation in spelling).
Carroll, Glenn, etc.
A good question!
@Donotbelieve It's why my MX-5 is Margaret; in honour of her. My Nan loved a good time. It seems appropriate and fitting.
@Donotbelieve No, always Margaret. She was always a lady.
