How many of us find ourself still believing concepts that we learned from religion? For example that certain types of sex is immoral.
Not me. At least not as far as I know.
My religion didn't delve into such specifics. All I knew was how to take communion.
Religious ideas of any kind no longer affect me. Maybe it's because I've been away from religion for well over 40 years. I will say that when you first get away from religion and no longer believe it, you will still "believe in your own way." This is a mechanism whereby you still want to fit in some way. My kids are like this now. Be aware that it is this sort of thinking that caused so many denominations worldwide. Everyone claims "one faith" but it is a myth.
That ship has sailed but there are other things that can be done to fix this for good. It's very simple actually. Do not indoctrinate your children. That's it..... Break and stop the vicious circle in the bud. Few generations later this question will be similar as asking whats the choice of preference, 33 or 45 rpms and people will scratch their heads saying what??????
I am sceptical about anyone that thinks that religious teaching didn't affect the way you think about sex. There are hundreds of responses on this site about how people here should and more importantly shouldn't conduct themselves regarding sex that they learned in Sunday school. Some here are very judgemental about others attitudes about the right correct and moral way to do the sex stuff. I get in tiffs here all the time with women that are here to meet men yet have no problem making it perfectly clear they don't like and think penises are ugly and should never be seen. I don't wonder how or where they learned that.
To my ears I hear something like this.
Oh I'm not a racist I love black people I just don't like the color of their skin.
What prompted the race remark at the end??? I personally love the different skin colors of humans.
It's a clearer more understandable way to point out the idiocy of the, I'm here to date men I just hate their penises women.
It's a package deal lady. Maybe you should instead place an ad that says.
Wanted: Handyman guardian comedian and must pay for everything while you're here and if I see a penis I'm calling the cops and complain about you all over social platforms.
Yes, they exist and they're here.
@Anonbene That did not address my question about the race remark in your last sentence. You talked about religion and sex, then out of nowhere threw in the race remark which had nothng to do with any of it. Just curious my friend and no meaning behind it.
You do you, I do me and let's strive to do or cause no harm.
All over the world we see suffering. The Christian religion (I don't know enough about others, sorry) teaches that suffering is caused by sin and evil, and is unavoidable. If we could get past that deeply ingrained idea, maybe we could fix more of the world's problems. At least we would not have a reason to be passive in the face of so many needs.
Hmmm...I never felt any kind of way about intimacy. I always knew that was just a natural part of life and the whole point of having a reproductive system. For a very brief time when I was still a teen, the irrational fear of Hell would creep up on me at times, though lol. As silly as that sounds.
Here is a quote from Joe Armstrong, who is an expriest and a member of the clergy project, that I totally concur with: "I do not believe in god. I see the indoctrination of children into religious faith as intellectual abuse. I was so abused. It damages thinking and it warps one emotionally."
It takes a long time. The good thing is that you have taken the first step. One must realize that Religion has had and does have an effect on our thinking. Once that is accomplished we can then try to catch it and think rationally.
Sex is always immoral if it is non consensual, or demeaning to another person.
By the way, this website has a bit of a learning curve.
For members who are open to dating, you will see that certain thumbnails and profiles have a heart symbol on them with a percentage. This identifies which members are open to dating, and the percent shows approximately how compatible you are with them. If you click the heart symbol on the top of their profile, you can see how it is determined.
You can improve your score in general by answering all the profile questions and writing a bio, which also earns you website points.
Commenting on posts and writing your own earns more points. At level two you can private message people, and at level eight you get an agnostic T-shirt.
The website uses profile algorithms to find member matches, so the more details one includes, the better the match.
Many people prefer to see a written profile talking about interests, hobbies, and backgrounds that can be quickly perused to find compatible partners.
In case you didn't know yet, to find members near you, click on the "Browse" button at the top of the page, then on "Members," and enter your preferred search parameters.
Click on the "Discuss" button, then "Nearby" to find members near you also.
Or click on the "About" button at the top left of the page to find links to FAQ or the website tutorial.
Points are now being given to level 3+ members who chat. You can see chat rooms on the group main page or at [agnostic.com].
