If you are interested in the origins and effects of religion, I would recommend what German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach and psychologist Erich Fromm had to say about the topic. Feuerbach explains why people feel the need to create religion and how creating gods and religion demeans the human being. In his book, ESCAPE FROM FREEDOM, Fromm explains beautifully how and why people choose to escape from their freedom by committing themselves to religious dogma.
