I honestly believe those ignorant fools are just plain racist. As far as I'm concerned, that is at the basis of the backlash, and 45 has done everything he can to stoke the fires of white hatred and resentment that men like Kaepernick are now the target of. To me, it's that plain and simple; they can't stand the notion that people of color can represent higher ideals and thereby gain respect for those actions such as taking a knee.
