I have noticed that even when you provide facts and proof, people insist on arguing, and often they don't understand their own argument- they just heard the answer they are giving you from someone else. Then they get angry and refuse to answer questions you have about what they have said. They also stand by their statements even when it's obvious they don't know what they are talking about. Why are people like that? If im wrong, I say im wrong and I move forward and explore new ideas.

I'm an atheist because all of the evidence that I've been able to find shows that science is the best way to find answers. If facts pop up that prove the existence of God or gods, then I will change my mind. Faith is believing in something in spite of the evidence. Rationality is changing your beliefs based on the evidence you have.

For people who don't give their belief systems much thought it can be emotionally disturbing to have their worldview challenged. If they are not in the habit of challenging it themselves, they don't know how to handle having it challenged by someone else.
