If you could nominate an Atheist to lead our nation, who would that be and why. Would gender or color matter?
I live in Canada and I am quite sure that although P.E.T. was educated by Jesuits he was an atheist and I believe he was not Canada first atheist prime minister either.
Christopher Hitchens would make a great president when he was alive obviously.
He did become a citizen, but since he wasn't born here he still couldn't be president, but I thought this was just a what if you could break all the rules and pick your president
I like ronald reagan junior. He's a die hard atheist and his dad did one thing right, which was knock down that stupid wall in berlin. There are many social walls which need to be brought down. Being white or male is useful when in a rush because certain kinds of weather are hospitable to whites and certain style conflicts like riots and donnybrooks are more a proper breeding matter to be accustomized to for males in general.
Accustomized for males in what way? Please explain.
Ronnie gets my vote. I see him on occasion as a guest on Chris Mathews and he comes across as smart, quick, informed but best of all, he holds political positions that are directly opposite to those of his father. I have all seen his tv spots in opposition to allowing churches to take political public positions and still retain their tax-free status. He also indicates that he is an avowed atheist and not afraid of burning in hell.
Elon Musk would get my vote. We need visionary leaders like him to take us forward and they are hard to find. I would hate that he would get caught up in the stupidity and machine that is politics and so get nothing done. I can't think of anyone else who is as prolific and visionary at the moment.
I think you already have had an atheist President or two, including perhaps Washington, Jefferson and most recently Obama. All very smart folk, wise and no fools.
Jefferson was a Deist. He believed in a god but wsnt' Christian and didn't affiliae himself with any organized religion.
This movie is from a Evangelical perspective, but absolutely correct, regarding our Founding Fathers. I loved it. Let me know if you agree. It is a must see.
My understanding is the Jefferson was a Diest, he as well as other founding fathers, didn't believe in a personal god, but in a natural higher order that kept the universe functioning, as you point out he wasn't a Christian and didn't affiliate himself with any organized religion. The fact that he doesn't buy into a personal god and saviour qualifies him in mind as an agnostic and gets my vote. Obama is a guess, but given his intelligence and the fact, at least for now, absolutely no one ( Maybe Trump is the exception..in spite of his vast Christian knowlege) can hope to be elected President without claim loud and clear that they are a believer. I think Obama is playing smart and loose with this god thing.
George Carlin. He understood it's all bs and, therefore, would likely decline as I would.
If there is a colored version of him that's female, she'd work too.
I love George Carlin, and if you have never seen his rant on religion, it is brilliant and is not to be missed, check it out on youtube. I think George Carlin would use a line from Groucho Marks, "I wouldn't want to belong to any organization that would have me"... seriously, if he was still alive he would get my vote.
I wish George was still around. I'd love to hear some new material, but people like Tim Minchin, Jim Jefferies, Ricky Gervais and Bo Burnham are filling that void for me.
I would nominate Elon Musk. He makes the impossible possible, he is looking at the big picture and he is working to save humanity from themselves. Sadly, he will not qualify as he was born outside the United States.
Gender, color, and race do not matter at all. Nobody picks them and they have no effect on the ability to govern a nation.
Gender, color, or presence or absence of religious beliefs are all minor considerations. The "biggies" are belief in and action to support a vigorous democracy, full support of civil rights, true concern about ALL of our people, ability analyze facts and issues and make wise decisions, and ability to negotiate with others to reach productive consensus, and personal honesty , integrity and empathy..
Gender, color, race, religion - none of that matters to me. What does matter is how they run the country - do they cater to the big business (as we've seen too much of) to the expense of the citizens? Do they present themselves in a candid, honest, responsible and classy way that this country deserves? Do they try - honestly try - to make this country better for the majority?
These are some of the things I look for.
Can you think of anyone that fits that description?
Gender, color and race - yes, none of these things are chosen, you are born with them. But religion? Do you really want a Scientologist running the country? Or Jehovah Witness? I picked the more controversial religions to make a point - I do make assumptions about a person's intelligence, morals and ability to think critically based on their religion or lack thereof. All of those qualities are very important in a person that runs a country.
Brigitta - No, I can think of no one - not one person.
EggMcMuffin - True, I am a bit weary of those folks running the country, absolutely. But, I also believe if they fit the last two of my small criteria - they wouldn't be either of those (or any religion!). To me, critical thinking, intelligence, thinking of others and being unselfish are decidedly NON religious qualities.
