He was asked what party his candidate was in and when he said democratic, they arrested him. how unconstitutional IS this?

Rachel Maddow also mentioned (1:29) Democrats voted to appoint several judges with conservative leanings so they could go home to campaign in the upcoming elections, and how this was a bad deal for them. That is because the Republicans needed to get home too.
The Democratic party seem to lack a strong enough leadership to take a stand on issues like this. I am all for compromise, but think the Dems got the short end of the stick on this deal.
possibly. things are usually not quite as simple as they seem.

This district has a history of ignoring court orders, including SCOTUS, going back to at least the 1970s. Rachel Maddow had a good segment on this last night, and interviewed the aide and his candidate; you can probably watch it on msnbc.com.
So in a way this is not surprising or new. Just something we've been able to not pay much attention to as the overall system seemed to be working properly.
Similarly, the mass purging of voter rolls just before an election is a common GOP tactic going back to at least the year 2000, but this being reported in > 20 states 4 weeks before the midterms is alarming people in the context of Trumpism and the importance of these midterms which people are way more aware of than normal.
As one commenter said, this is not new, come up to speed, people.
I found this rather disturbing in another post on this site. The Houston Chronicle covered it. The entire point of it to me would be why are the registered students now "not registered?" How did this happen and what can be done about it. At the bottom of these questions you either find ignorance or flat out wrong doing to get rid of these registrations to vote.
Firstly, he was not advocating for voting rights, he was "demanding" the county to change the registration of university students from one precinct to another with no documentation.
Secondly, according to the sheriff's office, he was not arrested, but rather he was cited for either disturbing the peace or failing to identify himself, depending on what news report you read.
incorrect. he was not disturbing the piece, they arrested him (first asking his candidate's political party), he was advocating, which in this case was demanding that the supreme court's longstanding decision be honored as it was NOT being honored, the students had been told one district and then told they'd done it wrong when they had followed directions exactly so he wasn't the one changing the district, and they confiscated his phone as well.
