I used to be a theist, but not a member of a particular religion. Now I'm an atheist again...
For whatever reason, I can't shake the feeling that I actually don't beleive most religious people are sincere. Yes, I'm mostly talking about Christians, because I interact with and mostly know them.
Honestly, I'd love to live in a society modeled after Christ's teachings, even as an atheist. However, I thonk one only needs to look at the state of the US, or the world, to dismiss any reasonable claim that Christians as a whole take those teachings seriously.
Thoughts?
I think some are, and some are not. It's really a question that can only be answered on a case by case basis but I tend to feel that the more a person profits from faith, the more synical their "belief" in it.
The problem us that Christianity is a sales pitch about Sinners And Salvation. People claim belief in hopes of NOT going to THE HELLFIRE that their Loving God will doom them to if they are not "Saved". If we looked upon the needs of others just because it was the right thing to do THEN we would be living sincerely. Not following. Adherence to religion allows them to do things like abusing women or signing tax bills that take from children and consider themselves "Forgiven" instead of being sincere and living with integrity. Its a cop out..
Its a whole world view so it is serious to them. I grew up in a very pious Catholic house and I spent my childhood understanding everything in the world through that view and it was pretty comprehensive, add the belief that to abandon the view is to sin then it's powerful stuff. My problem was that I kept asking questions and couldn't connect the Jesus of Bible with the Church. Even as a free thinking liberal with socialist tendencies I am still guided by the ideal of Jesus even if the rest of it was developed to serve the elites.
Furthermore I work with Muslims and they have occasionally tried to convert me because they really take their faith seriously and want to save me from the fire!
Some of them truly are. Religion perpetuates lifelong child abuse, however. It's mainly patriarchal and sets it's followers up as it's children. It doesn't make them correct. It makes them sufferers of abuse.
Simply Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
Although I don't think them stupid, I do think them misinformed, which is just as good.
“Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). It's time to stop saying you'd "love to live in a society modelled on Christ's teachings" because you're just cherrypicking the good bits!
Once people realise the buybull is imperfect and contradicts itself at every turn ,(making it so obviously man-made) they might be able to get over the whole shedazzle and just start thinking for themselves.
I think all theist know that they are pursuing a myth. They however appear to feel that they need to do this to fit in with a community that they have chosen. It would be simpler if they just chose a community that was based in reality rather than fantasy.
Anyone who is totally honest is going to soon find themselves outside of mainstream bible based belief.
Gal 5.14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Well a lot of the law doesn't seem to be headed in that direction, but take Gal as true and the result is you don't carry an Old Testament because you have it all summed up neatly in one sentence.
I raised that question with a bunch of Fundamentalists and was unable to get a really clear answer.
The same happens if you evaluate evolution v creationists and so on, you pursue truth walking in a straight line and you end up outside of Christianity.
Religion is like a soap opera, they don't want you to understand it or you won't come back next week ! ....to be continued...
