What was the calamity in 'The Road'?

It IS a bit depressing as a novel and movie. But it makes great drama, too.

The movie didn't really say either, just had a shot or two of distant flames.

What wasn't a calamity? The whole book was a nightmare, very gray, ghoulish trip to the coast for dying father and his fragile son.

@Vic47 I am not sure what you are after. The cause of what? The situation in the book is the situation in which the author choose to frame the work, which in this case was apparently after a terrible war. Of course human emotions, moral fiber, bravery and the rest are set in high relief in times of great stress enabling the author to highlight certain aspects of human nature that interest him.

I can't remember, it was way tooo dystopian a movie for me. Depressing as hell.
