This post is about a pet hate of mine that was just brought up to me. someone just told me I spelt something wrong without any consideration for me and people like me. my father was always digging at me for bad spelling. my teachers were always marking my work down because it's not just spelling but my writing is really terrible, like a 4-year-old child's. it clearly says on my profile that I am dyslexic. I also use an app called Grammarly to make my writing as good as possible and obviously a keyboard. people sometimes get quite aggressive and talk down to me like I'm thick or instead of just answering things pull me on one letter. REALLY????? you don't see me typing with one finger still after 16 years and then going back over everything underlined with the Grammarly app to do my best. it doesn't make me stupid as I consider myself reasonably intelligent and pretty good at a lot of things. can you imagine being born with say, an eye missing and people penalise you for it constantly and keep telling you you have one eye?
I empathize and sympathize with your pet hate. However, I see it from the opposite view: as one whose strength and forte is and always will be the English language. I was taught, and it is now an integral part of me, that spelling, grammar, pronunciation, and all the rest were very important and showed respect for the language. So, for me, the constant inundation of everything that is incorrect or just plain wrong is like getting a middle finger (or, to use your phrase, being penalized) every time I see, read, or hear the garbled version that is accepted nowadays. But as I said, I do understand and empathize with you. I also understand that most people nowadays do not place the same importance as I do on correct usage. Most of the time, I just let it go and not get upset. Different strokes....
americans don't even talk proper English and spell things differently and call things by the wrong name like trash instead of rubbish, fanny instead of arse and pussy instead of fanny ffs. I'm not trying to put anything up, I'm dyslexic and it's a mental block.I don't dig at Americans for naming things differently than the queens English. it's petty and insulting especially coming from you. people in greenhouses shouldn't throw stones marga. its got fuck all to do with different strokes because you are THE different folks. im English.
The English language is a nightmare. I for one write as I would speak, and could care less about all the rules and regulations!
People always judge, it's in our nature. The problem is that they make snap reactions without taking the time to consider, or investigate all the factors. I'm guilty myself of just that. To solve any problem, we must first bring attention to it. And I think you've done a wonderful job. So post away with your grammaricly incorrect bad self. I mostly just delete the haters, who needs em anyhow.
your so right mate, a presumption is the mother of all fuck-ups. I don't pull people because they're not so good at drawing.
it's bullying. i hurt with you in pain & rage, having grown up the target of ridicule myself. people can be incredibly cruel; but it is THEIR cruelty, & you can give it right back to them - as i began to discover one day when i just couldn't take it any more. i would say: "i feel hurt; say, when you go home now & look in a mirror, do you find perfection there?" do not let others - burdened & bent down with the insecurity their own imperfections cause them - wear you down. no one can actually be your judge, unless you let them - in your mind.
when it's been 57 years it just gets at you once every so often is all like a woodpecker slowly jabbing at you slowly but constantly or Chinese water torture. I mean you really have to be perfect yourself in every way to chew someone out over a letter or word when they can obviously read it anyway because I never get people saying they don't understand what I mean.
@LeighShelton, look, i'd claim to be almost unerring in matters of grammar & spelling - but would never assume that i or anyone else can be perfect - & it certainly doesn't give me a license to ridicule, bully or antagonise others.
I completely agree and hate bullying
I have noticed that some people on this site bring up incorrect spelling in a spiteful manner when they disagree with a members comment
very fakebookish
well there are dick heads everywhere
So sorry you had to experience that. I have some similar traits for which I have been unfairly criticized, so I know how it can sting. I hope I don’t make a bad situation worse but I feel compelled to elaborate. I think I saw that post, and I don’t think the commenter was actually criticizing your spelling, but rather agreeing with you by way of an obtuse joke. I think you mentioned immigrants, and he/she said “you spelled invaders wrong.” I think it was just an unfortunate misunderstanding, but I could be wrong too. Best wishes to you in any case.
you are right and eventually, i noticed but thank you anyway, my friend.
My typing is bad/slow with many typos.... If it was not for spell check, I would be up a creek. I try hard to correct my errors as I go, but sometimes they slip by. Folks should be a bit less critical of inconsequential things.
exactly
sorry that happened to you. I knew someone with a genius IQ that was unable to read.I read with auto edit and would only comment if spellcheck or whatever stuck a word in there that really changed the meaning of what they meant or made it completely unintelligible
thank you so much. strangely I can read really well and can tell a lot of times if a word looks wrong but I don't know what is right. before the internet, i avoided writing as much as possible and now with using it I have become considerably better at spelling but I will never not be dyslexic. I find it very telling that there are now 3 people who like the part where I did misspell something even after I explained myself.
@LeighShelton was just trying to give a quick example of how intelligence and linguistic abilities reading or writing may not be directly connected. My spelling and punctuation are frequently off because I don't have a backlit keyboard and I am often doing two things at once. NO one has been a jerk and called me down about it. I get irritated when I see the Grammar Nazis on patrol even if they have not targeted me
oh I understand and I thank you
That sucks. I'm sorry for your struggle and your frustration. It's not cool that the illiterate-by-choice crowd are giving people like you a bad name. I have much respect for you giving it your best effort despite your challenge. Unfortunately, no one CAN see you typing with one finger after 16 years, then going back over everything underlined by Grammarly. You are a minority, as most don't seem to care about literacy anymore. Try not to take it personally and instead assume that anyone criticizing you is tired of trying to decipher what some are slopping down carelessly. Maybe even preface it with a simple disclosure like "Please ignore errors...I'm doing my best!" to avoid having to deal with the Nazis.
I do apologise if the letter is afishiel . i really can't spell that and neither can Grammarly lol.
Better yet, maybe the preface should read, "I'm dyslexic - fuck off in advance, grammar dicks!".
Who cares..you know who you are....my grammar is despicable as I never went to school in the US...does not make me dumb..so fuck them the spelling Nazi
yes I agree but it just fucks me off as it keeps being an issue, my friend
Well said. Anyone callous enough to correct you online has an inferiority complex and lack of impulse control. I follow you because you have good talking points, your art is interesting, and you're hot. Really, really hot! You're my British eye candy!
