My parents then sent me on a Bible Study Tour of Israel for the summer-first time I smoked hashish.

To lighten you up didn't mean "to enlighten you" Just sort of trying to put you in a lighter mood, the not so serious mood.
And certainly it didn't mean to blast you away into oblivion just like what the pilot of the passenger plane said to his co-pilot in the movie "Executive Decision" when the pilot of the fighter jet showed the bombs on his plane's belly, "he's gonna light us up!"
