Who has seen the movie Spotlight?

Who has seen the movie Spotlight? It won a few Oscars and imo, did a great job on telling and showing the truth about sexual abuse in the church. I did think they could have gone a little deeper with it all as it was based on actual events.

One of my favorite movies. I also enjoy Philomena - again, fictionized account of true story of Irish Catholic girl who is forced to give up her baby, goes searching for him years later with help of atheist journalist. Judi Dench can do no wrong. I didn't particularly enjoy the book it's based on, though.

Great film! It shows how they move the pedophiles to protect them which lets them keep molesting children. It is fascinating the detective work done by the newspaper to see how far up in the church the cover-up goes, which is all the way up to the Cardinal. It shows how widespread the problem is and how far the Catholic Church goes to hide it. This takes place in Boston, a highly Catholic city, which put a lot of roadblocks into the investigation. I really recommend this movie.

I liked it. Its about time someone shown a light directly on the world wide child rape cabal.

I enjoyed it. There are several films coming out about JWs’ practices of shunning and pedophilia. Leah Remini’s series about Scientology on A&E was good. These things happen in many if not all churches and the more this is examined in film the harder it will be for churches to sweep it under the rug.

I agree.. I am also watching the Leah R. Scientology series. Very interesting. I had no idea it was that cult like but most if not all religions are based on cult practices.

Heard it promoted through an interview on NPR, then saw it a couple months later. A very good film. I agree that it is more about journalistic integrity vs. ecclesiastical stonewalling than the crimes themselves.

I enjoyed it. I liked the fact that instead of going after on priest, they took on the whole church. Those bishops and cardinals who just transferred the pedophiles to a different parish are just as guilty, maybe more, as the offenders.

Sex In A Cold Climate/ The Magdalene Asylums. You have to watch this documentary which was shown on PBS. It is the actual survivors of abuse by the Catholic church. It made me cry. This is the full length on Youtube, or it can be watched in four parts. It is so worth watching.

I will for sure check this one out.. thanks for sharing.. 🙂

I think the problem with that movie was that it was essentially a work of fiction depicting real-life events. It was trying to be a little entertaining and character-driven (with McAdams and Ruffalo), but with the flare of a documentary, while trying not to be too hard (overtly) on Catholicism itself. Overall, it's a good way to get your feet wet on the matter, that's why it wasn't too deep. And other Hollywood stuff: budget and runtime for theaters.

That shit is still going on in Mexico, it's fucking gross. That's why I'm with Trump on that wall sometimes, stops kaijus, Mongols, and Catholics (just a joke, kids). My family is pretty involved with the church and I question every priest I meet, "You a pedofile, bitch? Te quebro los dientes si eres un pedofilo, wey."

Fiction? Not sure I understand, the characters aren’t fictional. I have a good friend who knows and worked with Garabedian and commented on the accuracy of his portrayal. Have you ever put the Liev SchrIbner next to the real Marty Baron? Its almost creepy how well Levi nailed the portrayal.

Given the subject matter I understand why it’s “watered down”. Spotlight was released like 6 weeks before Christmas. Who wants to watch a graphic depiction of what those children went through. The movie was more about journalistic integrity at a time where the future of print media was bleak with no shortage of stories that need to be told.

I’m an admitted journalism movie junkie. If you want to see a new and heart pounding documentary on journalism check out this one. Check out “Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press” on Netflix
