I heard so much hype about The Big Bang Theory when it first aired and being a lover of science and comedy, I started watching, but soon realized the negative message it was promoting.
The writers and producers use a trick called Lampshading --- a tactic that's meant to let the viewers know that the writers/producers are self-aware and to makes us think we are in on the joke. However, it's a cunning way to reinforce sexism, misogyny, bigotry, racism, homophobia, and toxic masculinity, especially when accompanied by laugh tracks. This deprives the critics and opponents of their ammunition. The video analysis is quite eye-opening and served to confirm my own observations.
"The Big Bang Theory delights in poking fun at its male characters for their geeky obsessions but there's something even more pernicious going on just under the surface. Beyond the mocking of geekdom, the show is relentless in making fun of its male leads for not being 'real men." In their quest to prove their manhood the four geeks then end up being complicit in many of the most harmful aspects of hypermasculinity."
I also recommend watching Part 1 titled "The Adorkable Misogyny of The Big Bang Theory" and "Donald Trump: The Sitcom Misogynist" from the same channel (Pop Culture Detective).
I never watched that show but I think screen writers are looking for anything that sells. Things like the National Inquirer and other such rags sell because there is something there that appeals to people's baser nature. I do know this show was popular
It's so funny because this kind of deep connections was exactly what Jennifer James did. I remember a posting of hers that showed how the "Lion King" reinforced traditional male values. I could never watch that show without seeing what she meant.
i intuitively loathed the blokey strutting on an "intellectual" level, the few times someone would deem it worthy to linger at one of the episodes. glad i have a sense to smell macho bullshit ?
