Japan being buying american land from Manhattan to Hawaii... so you may need to re evaluate one of those allies. Defense wise, we only allowed japan to have enough ammo to defend the islands for a week.
Japan learned their lesson with.. was it Pebble Beach??? ... some famous golf course. Paid way too much for it then couldn't unload it. Part of the trouble for our trade partners was, and remains, what do you do with wads of US dollars? In the end, the only thing you can do is buy US stuff.
@Dick_Martin Funny, they will buy anything but a US car. Speaking of foreign cars market.... japanese and germans with korean right behind. You don't see americans cars in germany or japan or korea.
The Marshall plan was created to redo the mess, largely created by Britain and France after the first world war. Wilson wanted to go easy on Germany and it's allies but the winners wanted to squash them in the ground. The long and ponderous book "Pairs 1919" made that clear. Without the treaty of Versailles there probably would have been no WWII. Now we held the winning hand and called the shots and, despite grumbling from others, it has kept the peace for 60+ years.
Germany and Japan revised their constitutions where they would not engage in fighting. They would assist in a non-violent way. Also, Germany has kept conscription (18 months) which helps keep an emergency force and gives many a meaningful career.
I would argue that the UK and Canada are are staunchest allies, but my current closest friend and I never spoke to each other for the first year we worked together. We accidentally discovered we had a lot in common.
The Top 20 is a jumble of really good friends who all are special in their own way. I put India, Israel, Mexico, and South Korea in that same box. Oh, and France, Denmark, Italy, and Australia. And Union of So. Africa,.. But German & Japan stand in a place of their owm=n.
Benjamin Franklin used to tell a story about someone who had become his implacable enemy. One day, Franklin asked this guy if he would be kind enough to loan him a particular rare book from his personal collection that he had long wanted to read. Once this man obliged Franklin, he could no longer regard Franklin in the same negative way, and became much more positive toward him. (Of course Franklin thanked him profusely, and returned the book as promised).
So this is kind of a reverse-jiu jitsu way of "killing someone with kindness". It's hard to see someone you've done a good turn to, as a terrible human being.
Long ago I made a list of our 20 best, most loyal customers, looking for a common thread that we could expand to increase sales. The only common thread I could find was that everyone of them we had made some colossal screw up that had cost them (and us) big money. For some reason, that shared misery created a strong bond that survived assault from competitors.
The Marshall Plan was both humane and brilliant. As a result of it, both Germany and Japan are strong allies. If Israel would make a similar attempt with Arab nations and the Palestinian Arqabs, there might be a chance for peace in the Middle East. But, Netanyahu is too arrogant and demagogic to do that.
I we hadn't ripped our guts out resisting, the USA would, today, be negotiating, at a disadvantage, with the Third Reich. You wouldn't have gone to the moon - they would.
Germany and Japan don't send troops to where you need them.
You put me off my egg and chips (French fries in American)
That is absolutely 100% right. No argument from me. Britain is, and has been for 150+ years, our greatest ally. We have never had a better friend. Germany cost Britain the Empire. On the other hand, Britain found a new way, called the Commonwealth, to replace imperialism.
