I had always heard that a lot of pathogens were species specific (Rabies for instance not withstanding). So if you aren't allergic, it would be unlikely that associating with your pet would make you sick. I'd never seen it from the other direction though.
I guess it makes sense that enhanced exposure to human characteristics including pathogens would enhance your risk. I hope you'll excuse me if I don't test it. Lol.
