My paternal grandad was born in 1892 and in 1902 he and his older brother (by 2 years) lied about their age and ran away to sea. So at the age of 10 he was before the mast in the south China sea. My maternal grandmother was married at 12.
I thought these were pretty amazing stories till I got one upped by a friend who`s grandfather died in a gunfight in Argentina.
Does anyone have some great stories regarding grandparents?
My grandmother raised me, didn't knew how to read or write and yet had a business on NYC on the 40's and 50's. Raised close to 30 children from the neighborhood when she was young. She said my grandfather was the worst long tongue liar she ever saw.
Ever read 2 years at the mast. fantastic book [true story] of life at sea around 1860 . My grandfather and his brother in law were the crew that helped design and implemented the mulberry harbour at normandy [this gave the allies an instant dock. ] it survived the huge storm day 4 of the invasion unlike the american version which was lost
Last year, I learned that my maternal grandmother was ex-communicated from the catholic church for "witchcraft". I have always believed she was the most awesome person I've ever known, but that was just the cherry-on-top for me.
That`s even better than my great aunt being prosecuted for making her own liquor. (I still can remember the taste of pure malt she used to give us a spoon of).
probably actually understood medicine and cured people !
@markdevenish I never learned what she knew. Whenever she needed to help someone, and we kids were around, we got shuttled off to another room, or sent outside to play. The only thing I ever saw her do was stop bloody noses. I still have no idea how she did it. I really wish she had lived long enough to teach that stuff to me.
