The fear of him not leaving should be palpable. Could go to the SC. Could go worse and a call to arms - and a one percent of his supporters acting out would be devastating.

According to Anthony Summer's book on Nixon ("The Arrogance of Power: The Secret World of Richard Nixon" ), the Pentagon postulated that idea about RMN. They then made plans to move the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg to D.C., in the event Nixon tried to resist impeachment.
