Diminish yes, and someday Id say it might. Unless knowledge gets lost again and religion pops up for people desperate to fill the gaps. Either way we won't be around to see it. Maybe in a thousand years if we havent nuked ourselves or drained the world of resources.

Maybe not completely gone, but it's sway over the x and millenial generations is greatly diminished when compared to the boomer generation, it would seem evangelicals are driving their children away from religion in droves.

Maybe. There's some evidence that it's part of our evolution, probably as a way to help the mind cope with questions that it was suddenly able to ask about issues in life that had no answers. But if it happens, it won't happen quickly, and it won't happen peacefully. Beliefs don't give up without a fight, and the stronger the beliefs, the bigger the fight.

When people learn they don't need crutches anymore, then, yes, absolutely it will go away, until some waxing nostalgic will defiantly start practicing one, in order to be different.
