Alan Turing broke the Nazi Enigma code machine during WWII, using a precursor to modern computers which he invented virtually on his own. His contributions literally made it possible to win the war in Europe. He was gay.
I did not know this story. Thank you for sharing this. I have believed for a long time, very little of the history we are taught is very accurate, except names and dates.
Turing's work was held as "top secret" for a long time. So, he was denied public credit for his work. Most of his work is now declassified.
To many people it is more about the messenger than the message. No matter what one says or does is not as important as the who is saying or doing. Oppenheimer, creator of the atomic bomb which ended the war was removed from office because he was thought to be a communist. Nothing has changed and maybe it's even gotten worse.
