Tempering gun control dialogue

One thing is clear about this country: we’re more obsessed about firearms than any other country. There are many Second Amendment warriors who push the narrative that any further legislation will lead to some outright banishment if firearms keeping in mind that during the Reagan administration, a ban on fully automatics was implemented.

He made the very same points pro-control advocates made on the AR-15 today that weapons of such a caliber do not belong in civilian hands as Reagan did on full automatics.

While crime stats are comparable per capita to Australia, which has much more stringent gun control, the incidents of mass shootings has been far more frequent than at any other point in American history.

After 9/11, the TSA implement sweeping security guidelines at all the nation’s airports. Scaled down restrictions were implemented at sporting events, yet there are still many soft targets as they have been exploited often like movie theaters, malls, gas stations, churches and especially schools.

The NRA is arguably the most powerful lobbies organizations in this country. Spreading fear and panic drive firearms sales through the roof.

There are a few solutions: arming voluntary faculty with handguns when teaching is largely an underpaid profession, increased security presence, and even instances of a mini bulletproof bunker in the classroom that also protects against tornado damage.

Personally, I think it’s accessibility and lack of proper enforcement that allows so many of these people to slip through the cracks. There should be concentrated combined efforts from DCF, the census and ATF to ensure environments are considered stable for homes to be carrying firearms. I think there should be periodic checks to make sure there isn’t anyone considered unstable enough to not be near a gun.

That being said, we need to find ways to cull the gun-obsessed mentality this country embraces. Violence is far more embraced across all ages than promiscuity ever is.

Is current culture with firearms okay? What would you change? How would you change it?

The only time I think about guns is when I hear of another person or people losing life or limb because of them
