volunteering

I've recently filled out a few applications for volunteer work. It consists of being there for people with a terminal illness, mainly elderly men and women. Does anybody here have past or current experience in volunteer work?

I've volunteered at Habitat, food drives, hiking trail maintenance, adopt-a-highway, and tree planting. I can't volunteer on a consistent basis, so it is hit or miss. But I enjoy it and it is a good way to meet like minded people.

I was a hospice nurse. What you are doing is awesome. Helping someone die with dignity is huge.

Volunteerism was a requirement when I was in college; I was banquet coordinator for five semesters, went on a service trip to a worker farm for people getting back on their feet, coordinated said trip twice, and was a peer tutor. In the years after college, volunteering became more sporadic and tapered off considerably. I'm currently training to be a volunteer mediator for conflict resolution (tons of work to get state certification, but I'm enjoying it). I think serving one's community in some way is a civic responsibility.
