While I can't prove the existence of Uncle Sam, I have faith that he exists. I know in my heart that he's real and I believe he created America in 6 days with magic.
"The earliest known personification of the United States was as a woman named Columbia, who first appeared in 1738 (pre-USA) and sometimes was associated with another female personification, Lady Liberty. With the American Revolutionary War came Brother Jonathan, a male personification, and Uncle Sam finally appeared after the War of 1812.[8] Columbia appeared with either Brother Jonathan or Uncle Sam, but her use declined as a national personification in favor of Liberty, and she was effectively abandoned once she became the mascot of Columbia Pictures in the 1920s." Captain America is his nephew. Big Brother is his cousin. Mother Nature is his grandmother. And Father Time is their pater familias.
(My Trumpster Uncle says Uncle Sam is a Deep State Conspiracy to steal your freedom and give it to socialists.)
Uncle Sam takes from my pockets every paycheck... that fucker exist! Lol
'mercan's love their fantasies and quite a few live by them.
Can't argue with that.
I voted "Other" and I think Uncle Sam is like Santa Claus - you know he sort of exists when we want to highlight good things or unity. He exists as a symbol of what is supposed to be our better nature - now if only we had that better nature - because of real live people and their greed, uncompassionate nature, go down the list of nastiness, he has become a symbol of uber capitalism, greed, expansionism, war................
He was an early marketing tool for US Corned Beef, during the first world war when Tommies asked what the US stood for on the bully beef the character of Uncle Sam was created to symbolize family and the United states all in one.
By WW2 he was so recognizable he was on the recruitment posters as your version of the Lord Kitchener recruitment poster
@creative51 You're right, I got the dates wrong
Remove the hat shave off the beard and put glasses on him and he kind of looks like Bernie Sanders.
no.
He does, but he’s migrated to Mexico because he can’t live with US hypocrisy anymore.
I had a cup of coffee at Uncle Sam's house.
Is the easter bunny real? Serious answers only, pls.
Are you for real!
Next the Easter bunny, tooth fairy, and santa clause wil be polled to see if they ever did exist!
Numb shits are us???
I believe Uncle Sam exists as a form of propaganda meant to instill a feeling of patriotic duty in otherwise level-headed people who would lean towards conscientious objection of how the governing of our country is being conducted, and nothing more. People love mascots and feeling morally and patriotically superior. This combines all of those concepts.
I don't give a damn, fit that into your poll......
He exists as a mythical character. He does not exist in reality.
In this way Uncle Sam is just like God, Jesus and the Holy Spook.
... except that everyone knows he's mythical and that is not so of the other characters you named. they are widely, albeit incomprehensibly, believed to exist by a huge number of people.
g
@genessa Sad, but true.
Uncle Sam was developed from a Civil War joke among the soldiers and was then promoted as a. fictional figure to sell war bonds and recruit people into the armed services. He did not exist.
It is a bit of an existential question. I voted other but I guess it is along the lines of agnostic thought, um. Thinking as I type (not always a good thing) anyway, an image created by man (ad men to be accurate, never saw the series) to energize and instill patriotism, um this is starting to sound familiar don'tcha think?
I believe in America, as in the United States.
