This happens too often in this country and it doesn't have to, so it infuriates me. Plus, I take exception to "elderly." My mother is in her early 80s and I don't consider her elderly (and she wouldn't be amused if I did). My grandmother lived to 103 and was spry, happy, didn't even use a cane, and living independently until 102. With proper (affordable) health care, this could have been the future for this couple for another decade or two, maybe three. They deserved better.
I read an article on NPR about the rates of suicide increasing among the elderly. Isolation and cost of living appears to be the two primary reasons. We stopped acknowledging the elderly several decades ago.
When I was a young child family still took care of family. Communities took care of the elderly.
This is exactly why you guys need Bernie in office!
