Another interesting thing to remember in America you don't have to pay part of your salary to the religion you say you belong to. I can't remember which European countries do this but it is another reason why their numbers have gone down significantly. It's easy to say "oh, I'm a Christian and I belong to xyz denomination" but if they started taking money out of people's paychecks to give to that church I imagine the number of agnostics would rise significantly too. Or if they started taxing churches then you'd see a lot less churches. I personally knew a pastor that was using his church to launder money from his other business.

I think the churches in the U.S. shoudl be taxed. It is written into the existing tax code that their tax exempt status depends on their stayign out of politics, which many have not done, so, at least, those churches tht get int poltics shoudl be taxed. We just need to enforce th tax codes.
