So to sum up, predicting when earthquakes will happen and how severe they will be is extremely difficult and perhaps even impossible (certainly impossible right now). What we can estimate, however, is the probability of a major earthquake happening in a given number of years - as a result of the Juan de Fuca plate, the North-West region is more likely than not to experience a major quake every 430 years.
