When I was attending college they had what was called an FTE or full time equivalent student. Budgets for departments and programs were based on FTEs, as was the pay for some adjunct faculty.

I think we need to bring the concept of FTEs into the employment statistics. Two 20 hour per week jobs would be rated as 1 FTE job. Four 30 hour per week jobs would be rated as 3 FTE jobs. This would give us a much more accurate picture of employment.
