Tax the parasites . . .
Churches are not costing state or federal government anything at all. As non-profit organizations there is no profit to tax. Compare with the YMCA, with credit unions, with insurance associations such as USAA. Those are not charitable organizations but they are owned by the members and are not taxed. How could you possibly tax them when there is no profit? All of those organizations contribute to government because all of them have employees, and those employees pay taxes. And they contribute mightily to the economy through the services they provide.
So far as local property taxes, there is justification for requiring churches to pay those because churches use local services such as fire protection, streets etc. I think churches are exempt because most people feel that churches provide a useful service and should be encouraged and rewarded rather than being penalized. In a democracy the voters hold sway.
Drumming up hostility, anger and grievance—that’s the hallmark of Patheos.
Wrong . . . .
Churches receive federal funding:

Churches recieve federal funding for social programs and disaster relief justmoff the top of my head.
@DavidLaDeau @Archeus_Lore Maybe a little bit from time to time but not to the tune of $71 billion.
Why would you fund something like a social program and then turn around and tax the money you granted. Hell, let’s tax all these public schools. Don't stop there. Tax the damned IRS. Whoee! All our budget problems will be over!
@WilliamFleming Do you understand much of anything you talk about or is your goal just to be argumentative? If you want to make a point do your homework. The U.S. govenment does not tax its grants.
@DavidLaDeau Can’t you recognize sarcasm?
@WilliamFleming Ooh damn I feel like an ass. I apologize! I need government funding to make it all better!
@WilliamFleming Yes and that was not it
By donating their income to themselves as registered charities churches can claim they are non profit but all of the money says inhouse.
The Mormon church has over $6Billion in assets alone that we know about, The RC owns it's state (sold to them by Mussolini) and huge swathes of land over all the world.
The CofE has massive business assets that all write off millions in tax each year by donating it to ...The CofE.
No church is not for profit. They are all Business'
@LenHazell53 You probably have a point about those large churches. Maybe they need to be somehow fleeced. Most of the churches in my rural area are anything but wealthy.
It occurs to me that most non-profits are required to return excess money to their member-owners. Maybe tax laws could be changed to require the same thing for churches. Require that any income over operating expenses be either donated to charitable causes or returned to the donors.
