The Equal Rights Amendment was sent to the states by Congress in 1972.
Both chambers are controlled by Democrats, who first passed it in the state's House of Delegates by a 59-41 vote before the state Senate approved its companion resolution, 28-12. Seven Republican senators, including the Senate minority leader, joined with Democrats to approve the resolution.
The resolutions need to be formally approved by each chamber before Virginia officially becomes the 38th state to ratify the amendment, though the national effort is already facing legal challenges.
Interesting that we were covering this in American civil rights history yesterday. And although it keeps getting extensions the USA still feels that there should not be equal rights for all.
Some of the arguments we looked into were - conscription - women don't want to be conscripted into the military and forced abortions. Right wing women are scared that men would force abortions on women if they got pregnant.
From a European perspective, bloody hell what are you playing at America?
I'll update our lecturer on this, she likes to keep up to date.
Congress has 2 years to pass various laws to make E.R.A. implementation take effect.....and various courts now can rule upon the "7 year" "limit" that does not appear to be anywhere in the CONSTITUTION for Congress to "set" or "extend" or "renew" more time limits.....the 2nd Amendment was ratified 203 years after the 12 BILL of RIGHTS was sent to the states in 1789 ratified in 1992 now officially the 27th Amendment limits Congress to ONLY ONE PAY RAISE after being re-elected....
Just in time for Susan B. Anthony's 200th birthday.

I appreciate Virginia's effort but the Congress we have now will stop it by hook or crook.
Amazingly Oklahoma only missed ratification by one vote. I worked every weekend for 6 months walking door to door getting postcards signed and sending them to legislators. We were sold out by a female Democratic Rep who is now a Republican operative in Washington working for ALEC.
Beware the Democrats. Especially in oil & gas states. They’ll paint themselves as green and justice warriors while doing the bidding of their corporate fossil fuel, insurance company, & private prison donors
If Congress does NOT repeal or amend various sexist laws 2 years from now, women will be eligible to file lawsuits against Congress for NOT enforcing the new 28TH AMENDMENT ratified by Virginia this week ....THIS OFFICIALLY adds women under the 14th Amendment for "equal protection" NOT "separate, but equal" under Plessy v Ferguson
