An atheist friend of mine told me that when he was in school he believed in evolution. And when he was in church he believed in creation. He had no trouble with this because he didn't have to believe in them at the same time. When I had been an atheist for three years I did an inventory of my beliefs and found lots of contradictory beliefs that I had previously been unaware of.
Thoughts?
I think the problem is that there's a lot of interpretation of the text in the bible, and I've only met a handful of wackos who take it literally. The problem then becomes one of "picking and choosing" which parts of the bible you choose to embrace, thereby bringing into question the entire bible itself!
so what exactly is the difference between being an atheist and an agnostic. .. I thought one believed in nothing and the other believed in everything...
Great question. The definitions on this site suggest that atheism is that you KNOW that god does not exist, whereas an agnostic is one that SEES NO EVIDENCE for the existence of god.
@zanyfish athiests will believe what is proven. God hasn't been proven so it's existence is not part of their world. I'd stop short of saying atheists know there is no god. The possibility of it's prove in the future remains.
Well done, you have straightened yourself out in many ways!
Often people are brought to face their contradictory ideas when they are in discussions or arguments with others, It could be more difficult to accept you are wrong in the heat of the moment but hopefully things work out for the better.
