In the past year, three men messaged me using the same approach:
One photo: a handsome, head-and-shoulders shot. Stolen from a modeling website?
Profile says he moved from Ireland to Virginia recently. Listed no activities or hobbies.
Same Message
"Great smile! I'm interested in you. Distance doesn't matter with love. I can relocate."
"We live too far apart to develop a relationship," I replied. "Focus on women near you."
Then POOF! his profile disappeared. Maybe he blocked me.
Your thoughts? What's with Virginia State?

Nigerian dating scammers work in large warehouses with phones and computers. They scam lonely singles in America, Canada and Western Europe. These operations earn millions of dollars. Hundreds of thousands of lonely people are left heartbroken and penniless each year.
Use Google image search if someone looks too handsome or beautiful. Often you find them on Scam Buster websites.
I have been approached by 38 scammers on dating websites. They are laughably easy to spot:
Extremely gorgeous photos. Scammers steal photos from modeling websites and profiles from dating sites.
Claim to have fallen in love with you immediately. Call me "an angel fallen from heaven."
Poor command of the English language. Rarely capitalize the letter "i."
Pressures you to immediately switch to instant messaging.
5 Same sob story: wife died in a fiery car crash or ran off with his best friend.
Says he is an American citizen who was born in Europe.
Claims to live in a city near you, in my case Seattle.
Temporarily working in West Africa oil fields as an engineer or missionary.
Keeps up romantic pressure until SURPRISE! ... He was robbed at the airport/bus station/taxi and needs you to immediately wire him $5,000 so he can fly into your arms. Or his child needs emergency, lifesaving surgery.
Keeps it up until you run out of money. None got a penny out of me.
I report and block them. They pop up like daisies with new photos and profiles.
Did you read my reply?
There's more than one group on this Agnostic site that actually devotes time to searching out the scammers on site.
I'm well aware of the scammer hallmarks - I do this daily. (Mainly because I enjoy it and I don't like seeing people hurt).
The photos are often used over and over again. Which is one of the ways we often catch them.
The best search engine (IMHO) for reverse image searching is [yandex.com]
Google and Tineye are also useful. There are pinned posts on these and other topics here: "Watchers"
I've known several women who have fallen for the Nigerian sob story.
I knew one who refused to accept the truth and kept up the "relationship" for over two years. For all I know, she could still be at it. But, she turned out to be as big a scam artist as her Nigerian "boyfriend", and we are no longer acquainted. As far as I'm concerned, they deserve each other.
Everything you posted is just another reason why I have completely eschewed internet dating. I don't trust anyone, anywhere, anymore.
Scammers are everywhere and they are as opportunistic as mold in the South.
@IrishTxJudy I really hate how they make folks feel like there are only scammers online?
There are some genuine folks here - but if you get enough "Hello Beautiful" PMs - you start to despair of ever meeting one.
@IrishTxJudy Agreed. I put in at least an hour of my own time daily - hunting scammers. I didn't need a refresher.
@KKGator Breathtaking.
How come no one's scamming me? Am I not pretty enough? "Laughs maniacally"
I think you're onto something, hee, hee.
Yep, if you are not even good for the price of the bus fare, they know they are wasting time on you. LOL
For a savoy person they usually are pretty easy to pick out ,especially when it is only about sex and they really do not want to take the time to get to know,,men have been scammed by women ,it has no boundarys
Yes. Years ago some guy claimed to be so broke that he did not even have money for bus fare! I mean if you do not have $3 you really should NOT be dating. He tried to get me to come over to his place, which is code for sex. I told him we have not even met in person for a first date yet, I will be damned if I go to his house for a first meeting. I told him when he has money for bus fare we can meet at a halfway point. He kept trying to guilt and persuade me and would not accept the no. And then by the end was soo butthurt saying things like wow I see how little I meant to you! You won't even come and see me! Just leading me on! Like FCK OFF bro don't guilt trip me cuz you are either actually broke or trying to get laid for free, having women come to you and go home by ourselves. Ass
@demifeministgal lol, I had one who wanted me to drive 300 MILES to pick his sorry ass up, bring him to my house, because he STILL lived with his mother and sister.
@CarolinaGirl60 ooh man that would be worse! Like you want me to pick and drop you off so you can get laid?! FOH XD
@demifeministgal and only a 600 mile round trip! I laughed my ass off.
I actually found a real person on Facebook dating, just across town from me, however, it quickly went BAD! First, she was all lovey dovey, until I found out the hard way that she is a narcissistic sociopath, when I failed to secure a new car loan. After that, her insanity forced me off of social media for good (no great loss there), with her breaking off the relationship, claiming I am a monster. Fortunately for me I live in a secure apartment building. Then I paid for a background report on her, and SURPRISE! She had multiple defaulted credit accounts, two bankruptcies, two DUI convictions, AND a child molestation and failure to register conviction in Virginia while as a school teacher! Lesson learned, that even real people can be absolute trash. For now on, before I agree to a first date, a background check will be mandatory!
Just 30-minutes ago I found an interesting brand-new dating site profile for an attractive lady 10-years younger in a small town in West Virginia I'm very familiar with, very near me. In the short profile she mentioned she'd just recently moved to Wasilla AK. I wrote her and told her I'm in Wasilla often and I could meet her there at a particular coffee shop if we developed a writing relationship. Her response was immediate... in bad grammar she told me how age and distance were not important, but that she's broke and needs a guy with ample resources. Wrote her back and told her I was a just a little bit suspicious of the story and asked her to prove her locations... I asked her two questions about each town that you'd have to live in each to know the answer. She immediately disappeared from the site. Yeah, either I was blocked, or others reported her as a fraud before I had the chance. Ya gotta politely test the ones that sound a little scammish. They often have relocation stories. And yeah, she'd just lost her husband and child to some disaster. And wanted to continue on instant messaging. Red flags all-around! But people fall for them every minute of the day.
@Gwendolyn2018 One question I asked the "Wasilla" scammer was, "What happens when the AlaskaRail train stops at the Wasilla station?" Would be impossible to not know... nobody can go from the north part of town to the south because it parks straddling the main N-S roadway, for 10-15 minutes. For the little ski town in WV I asked what restaurant often has a waiting line going out the door, even in the snowy winter. Ha ha. Not questions they could answer from Nigeria.
@Gwendolyn2018 I always laugh at those. I've had a couple say they were moving to my state - as if it's a tiny, single dot on the map, and we'll automatically be close by ! Most have never even heard of where I live ! Jerks.
@Gwendolyn2018 Good point on the "keeping us savvy" comment. I report them every time I find them because they clutter-up the dating sites. Thinking back to other easily spotted items they throw at men....not proof, but likely indicators... they're very often childless widows (makes the sucker men think there's money there), they love animals, but don't have them (covers all bases), are "Middle of the Road" on politics (again, covers all bases), they're ALWAYS too far to meet (or immediately tell you they just moved 2000 miles away, an hour ago) and their stolen photos are NEVER dated. I really feel very bad for the women who get taken (I think they're usually looking for love and security)... but have no sympathy for the guys who fall for the frauds (because I suspect they're thinking with their dicks when taken).
@Gwendolyn2018 Oh, some men are definitely looking for love. Count me as one.
I find the great bulk of members of this site are extremely good at identifying scammers. It is my experience that Admin deletes their accounts very fast.
Scammers will use a range of psychological tricks to snare their marks.
I commend @KKGator's comment to you.
Thanks.
Scammers are everywhere online - not just dating sites ! Chatrooms, want ads, if you're selling anything, or looking for tenants or roommates, EVERYwhere !
It's been my experience on any dating site, that as soon as I hear "distance doesn't matter, I can come to you" - a red flag begins to wave ! The last one I encountered on Tinder, was ridiculously persistent, until I finally relented and said "ok, let's see what we have in common, and asked a couple more probing questions.
POOF - just like you said ! Ha.
Scammers are disgusting they like to play with good people's feeling who are looking for a real match. Finally I learned how to identify scammers and my patience is gone. When they send me their introduction and questions I only answer two or three then to stop them I say ok if you want to know more about me let's meet face to face. The scammers sent me their phone number but I tell them that I will call them after I met them in person. Funny but they stop bothering me when I don't play their dirty game.
Hi Cecelia, I'm disappointed to see your post because though I've just recently joined the site, I thought it was scam free. Hmm. I guess they just haven't got to me yet. I thought the process of accumulating points before being able to message did the trick but I guess not. I too hate them and have been emotionally bleeped by them. Like you say, after a while, you get a hang of their style and can then avoid them early on. Disgusting,
"Watchers" - if you read the pinned posts you'll get an education on scammers. (Some information from the Better Business Bureau etc..).
Read some of the posts marked "REMOVED" at the top - and you'll get an idea of what the average scammer here looks like.
We get our fair share of scammers daily. Thankfully there's administration who looks for them and they listen to member reports and check those accounts as well.
They aren't tolerated here for long. (Unlike other dating sites).
I haven't had that problem here but as it states that I am here for the community that may be why I have not been approached. I met my girlfriend on a dating site after sifting throught hundreds of fake accounts. Not kidding.
Happy for you.
Scammers are everywhere. They are here and I find them in other dating sites like Mingle 2. Usually they are fly by night people looking for a fast buck. However, I am followed by one woman in this sight from Puerto Rico and she just disappeared. Gone but her profile is still here. I think she joined the site, went to level 2, then just lost interest. You never know?
A relatively new twist on the dating site "scammers" (and probably MUCH more successful with men) seems to be the roving 1-woman escort services using the sites for connections. I discover them by doing a reverse image search for an unusually attractive women and discovering they're a real person... but operating her own personal escort service where they travel the country, staying in large cities for like 4-days (maybe the magic number before the hotel boots them out for needing too many sheets), then on to another. They make appointments ahead. I've never responded to one but a past friend (now deceased) used to use their services regularly (finding them on now shut-down ad pages). Since the various advertising sites have closed down they use the dating sites very successfully and probably make a few days' appointments in a new city in a few hours, before the sites shut them down and they pop-up in 4-more cities. I'm all for successful women's entrepreneurship, so have no problem with their business plan, but I find it offensive to be finding them on dating sites.

Wow what a smile. How about a coffee some time? Just moving to Orlando and would love to see that smile in person.
When I said ok but I will pick the place then he stopped bothering me. Hahaha
I sent a fella a screenshot of his photo on Scamdiggers once. That was satisfying. But first I spent a lovely afternoon wasting his time and energy.
LOL.
All of these sound like approaches I've used.
No wonder i'm alone.
You are smart enough to not be scammed. Males are approached by scammers also.
Dodgy can admin delete user????
Most likely admin. deleted them.
