POST-NORMAL PANDEMICS: WHY COVID-19 REQUIRES A NEW APPROACH TO SCIENCE
“In addressing pandemics, science has never seemed more needed and useful, while at the same time it appears limited and powerless. The existing contract between science and society is falling apart. A new covenant is urgently needed to navigate the days ahead.”
Seems like a pretty weak argument spoken in unappealing bureaucratese.
The stilted language serves to both legitimize AND obscure the apparent appeal for more diverse inputs, a different relationship between man and the rest of the ecosystem, a generally healthier world through a more holistic approach...
Are they proposing NOT developing tests, quarantines, and vaccines?
Calling for a new societal paradigm, a restructuring of institutions to make them less elitist and more democratic, only means something if specific strategies are proposed. How does all this nattering translate into new approaches, policies, and remedial actions?
This is all very vague and, as I said, obscure. Give me a real, concrete plan.
Good point. It is rather vague.
True. They seem to be a group that is well-educated in science, and who are concerned with the impact of scientific findings on society, and with utilization of science by the public.
