This is not just about one religion and particular people. It happens in all religions and outside religions. It also happens among highly college educated people. I have seen and lived with them.
How to process thoughts is the ability that is acquired with practice after a conscious decision. Once you make that decision to not believe into anything that does not make sense to you, cannot be reasoned and therefore, avoid giving into this kind of BS.
There are also people who have decided to only pick the good from religion and the world and use it to their advantage. For example, the sensible talk about rules of behavior at the time, lessons of history, how people can be fooled and how to take the good and leave the rest. I have also met and lived with them too.
Life after all is about cherry picking. Take the good and leave the rest. Nothing in life is all good and nothing is all bad. It is true about everything - a faith, place and people.
You can be religious, non-religious, political, apolitical, normal, weird or wild - the yardsick of what is good is only one - Are you a good human being?
