It reminds me of the covers for detective books and magazines I used to see in stores when I was a kid.
It’s a tease. Like the covers on formulaic fiction. Do you remember Mickey Spillane?
Monarch books were one of those prolific publishing house from the 50s through to the 70s who churned out cheap paperback for railway stations and seedy book shops.
Most of their writers were paid by the word and if a good one turned out a best seller would be snatched up by the parent publisher.
