brush with death

How many times did you have a brush with death? I'm not asking about a near death experience. I'll use myself for an example. I've had 4. At age 8 a dog bit me in the throat missing the juggler by cm. At age 15 I was messing around with an outside light fixture at my Grandma's house thinking I could fix it so it would work. There were two wire cutters in my tool basket, one all metal and the other insulated handles. I just happened, without looking, to grab the insulated ones and proceeded to cut through the wires. There was a bright ark like what a welder sees when welding and I was knocked on my butt. Found out later it was a 240 volt line that powered the water pump on the well. At age 19 I spent 13 months in a war zone dodging people trying their best to kill me. Many close friends died. At age 22 I split my head open in a motorcycle accident and spent 25 days in a coma. Was told by my doctor I was lucky the policeman show up when he did. I laid on the street for 50 minutes before he found me and my heart stopped when he was administering first aid. My chest still hurts sometimes from when he was doing the compressions. I used to think God really loved me and he had a purpose for keeping me alive but now my atheist thinking tells me I am a very lucky person and it's just chance I'm still alive.

I mentioned some on another post . But I can think of many more . I was riding on the bow of the family boat when the steering cable broke and I was thrown off the boat and under water and as I surfaced my head hit the bottom of the boat .Thankfully my father shut off the engine just in time or I would have been killed from the propeller. Another time I was swimming under water in a pool and swam full force into the concrete side of the pool .I prefer not to go into the details . I was almost thrown off a bridge over a railroad by an escaped prisoner I was escorting back to jail in the Bronx NY. Another time I was responding to a call about a domestic dispute and the drunken guy attempted to stab me in the stomach but the knife was deflected by my large belt buckle There are more but that’s enough for now

The closest I have come was trying to get rid of my fear of heights. I was Carowinds in South Carolina and decided to ride "The Nighthawk" to get rid of my fear, they didn't strap me in properly so when we went upside down I almost fell out. But thankfully my cousin grabbed me and tried to hold me in, she told me to squeeze onto the metal or whatever that separated my legs. I don't know how I didn't fall.

Plenty... a .45 to my head, a .38 to my ribs, car accidents that I walk away wondering like being hit head on by a fuel tanker full of fuel the tanker flips sideways and did not exploded like in the movies, all I had to show for was a broken arm. Example of the So Expensive Wonder Cure for Hep C. Being found in Great Physical Health at my Age is something to Dance for. Just lost a brother in law a couple weeks ago that seemed in good health and was seven years my junior. Realizing I am at an age You Lose Friends at a Faster Rate that You Make Them! Death Could be Around the Corner but I no longer defy the odds as I did on my Youth, I do need to stop telling people I will dance on your grave... no longer finding it funny.

I can't say I have ever had a true bush with death because thanks to a combination of quick thinking, reflexes, training, experience and dumb luck I have aways come out of my hundreds of misadventures more alive than dead.

Humans are one of the most frail organisms on the planet---No wings, no claws, no shell, no horns..."Thanks a lot, Epimetheus!"---Pretty much all we have to defend ourselves and ensure our survival is our intelligence (oh, and thumbs, of course...). People tend to us their intelligence to varying degrees, but no one is better off without it. I've personally had 3 'near death' experiences: When I was 18 I was in a horrific car accident in which the car practically disintegrated around me (I walked away from it)...The other two were failed suicide attempts, one by overdose (you would think 23 sleeping pills would have done the trick, right), and the other by gun (pistol jammed and couldn't be fired)...After those, I can see why some people would think that some cosmic force is protecting them. All it's done for me is to learn how to not screw it up next time...

I had a no damage heart attack as a result of being dehydrated rushing to mow the lawn a couple of years ago. I had woken up feeling great, it was a 72F day.
Ladies, it really is different for us. It took me 2 days to find out what happened and why I was feeling like crap.

Mmm first brush with death..a little Shitzu attacked and bit me in the face when I was a baby..2nd I fell down the stairs..broke my left arm. 3rd..got hit by a rogue wave when I was 7..almost drowned..the current sucked me out far..I was underwater what seemed like 4ever..I got spit back out by another wave scraping my back doing underwater somersaults ...fucking hurt like hell...till this day I am terrified of large waves...and the OCEAN in general...4..thrown off a horse into a tree..5..attacked by an angry deer ( my dog at the time saved me) 6. Ran my bike into a car..lucky they slammed on the breaks...7.almost overdosed at a hippie festival on mushrooms..( long time ago) 8. Ex husband almost killed me by wrapping a seatbelt around my neck..I punched him as hard as I could to get him to let go...
8. Actually this is 7. And my ex husband is 8..anyway..I was a teenager and my pocketbook went into my bike spokes..I flipped over the handlebars went flying 5feet hitting pavement..glasses went flying I scraped my whole left side of my face..had a concussion..and looked like a mountain lion scratched my face...

My first brush with death I was probably 5 or 6. I jumped into the deep end of a pool not knowing it was the deep end and not knowing how to swim. I still don't know how I survived for sure. My second I was 16 and wrapped my car around a pole and survived unscathed though I know several who did the same and didn't survive. Another time I was walking my dog who then ran into the path of an oncoming truck which I then jumped after her and saw the wheels of the truck coming towards me and at the last moment it turned and passed me by. Most recently I was riding in an overloaded car on a slick highway when the driver checked his cellphone and didn't see the car up front had stopped. At the very last moment he hit the brakes and the car slid into the car in front with the car behind sliding into the rear of the car. I was certain I was dead but again survived unscathed.

In the last 7 years I have had 3 brushes with death. 7 years ago I was riding in the front passenger seat of my car in Boston when a runaway tractor trailer hit my door and took off. They had to take me out with the "jaws of life"and I survived with a broken back. Two years later I was diagnosed with AML-acute myloid leukemia which has a low survival rate 10-15%. The oncologist told me if I didnt start chemo right away I wouldbe dead in 3 weeks. I chose to do the chemo even though I was dead set against it. Most patients don't make it to transplant (bone marrow) My best friends sister going through treatment never made it to transplant. Two years later I started passing out , hitting my head when falling backward. Hospitalized again I had congestive heart failure and a blood clot in my lungs. Two years after cardio rehab I am alive and well-resuming life thinking everything happens for a reason. nothing to do with a god.

I was in a hurry to get to class and was pedaling hard down hill on my tenspeed. SOmeone turned left in front of me. Everything went into slow motion and as I tried to make the turn with him I hit between the wheel well and the front window strut. I was able to twist my body so my shoulder hit the windshield and ended up with my head laying in the drivers lap. Backed the frame of my bike up and inch and did a few thousand dollars damage to the car but only got bruised

When I was little I was running through a field of really tall grass. I tripped and fell on a long medal rod.

Fortunately it didn't go through but it did knock the breath out of me.

I think about 5

-2 years old, i sprayed hairspray down my throat. (Don't ask)

-3 years old, I put my right elbow through a pane of glass, got 13 stitches. missed a major blood vessel by milimeters. (Again, don't ask)

-7 years old, I got my finger caught between the prongs of an electrical plug as i was plugging it into an extension cord. My muscles were almost paralyzed as the electricity went through me and i had a hard time unplugging from the cord. (I don't remember)

-20 years old, while in the US Navy, the ship i was serving on had a cruise missile fired at us from Libya. It got about 20 miles away from us, which, is actually pretty darn close.

-30 years old, while driving i got hit on the drivers side by a pickup, it hit the front side of the car, if i had been going a little faster it would have gotten the driver's compartment.

  1. 8 years old, stuck my finger in a light socket. That was rough. Knocked me on my ass.
  2. Crashed my gyrocopter in a fence. I lost my hydraulic brakes. Came to with the rotor blade buried in the ground a foot from my head. Had to have hip surgery. Tore the cartilage.
  3. Took that last big drink and tore out on my 4 wheeler and saw the ditch but did react to use the brakes. I had my helmet tied to the back of my 4 wheeler. Got a concussion out of that stupidity.
  4. Didnt get hurt, but i thought i wasnt going to get down safely. I flew my gyrocopter under a big cloud and caught a thermal that pulled me up and pushed me down in the air. it took my forward flying away. I started falling down and just caught a gliding motion and landed. Damn near crapped.
  5. Flew into a dust devel while flying my gyrocopter and it turned me around and i started to drop but i was able to fly out of it. The wind picked up so bad i had to land sideways and taxy into my hanger to stop my rotor blades.
  6. Took off in a cesna 150 and was doing a pattern and i caught part of a wing tip vortex from the last plane doing an approach. that damn near turned me sideways. I was high enough to recover.

I don't fly anymore. Im retired. Cost much. Younger guys sport.

To have that many close calls, you are lucky to be alive .Thanks for your service
