How did none of this ring hollow to the people of their day? I get they were simpleminded and superstitious but... wait, no, I answered my own question; because they were simpleminded and superstitious just like they still are today.
But seriously, you can buy your way or a loved one out of hell or buy your way or a loved one into heaven? How does the church make so much money off bullshit this obvious?

Well if they spoke up there was always the inquisition.
Fear is all they have...fear is all they've ever had...reason and logic escapes them. not just in the Middle Ages but in todays world...religion is about two things, money and power.....your money and their power over you.
