Have you verified the veracity of this quote? When, where & too whom did he say that. I have a problem with this.

It comes from the memoirs of Bill Moyers, a white house staffer who travelled with LDJ to the south on a tour in 1964, specifically to drum up favour for the Civil Rights Act, which he saw as a way to keep the people fighting one another so he could get on with doing whatever the Hell he liked.
On the same trip Moyers repeats "the amusing anecdote" first reported by Adam Serwer of MSNBC, regarding how LBJ like to keep a live rattlesnake in the trunk of his presidential limousine so he could trick none white gas attendants in to opening it and have them "pissing themselves".
"Once, the stunt nearly ended with him being beaten with a tire iron. Had not the President's bodyguards intervened"
Their strategy is to convince us to punch down rather than uniting to punch up, at them.
