Sorry if anyone post this topic before as I am a newby here. I grew up in a Jewish household in the northeast and have been living in the bible belt in the southeast for almost 30 years. I am not religious and most of the men I have met in the south come from extremly hard core baptist famlies. Ugh! I am pretty much a loner these days but enjoys my friendships. During the holiday season I love to decorate with twinkle lights, snowflakes and santa stuff, not much geared towards the baby jebus. Do any of you do the same?
I'm also from the NE and am Jewish. I put up my Menorah and have never done the Christmas thing.
Welcome! I moved from IN to GA twenty years ago. Sadly, not THAT big of a culture shock. Indiana has caught up with, and might even pass GA for religious looniness...
Yes, I decorate. I do not favor mangers OR santa, but love lights and the fragrance of pine.
I'm from the south myself and know what ya mean about hardcore baptist. We never decorate but we do build a nice fire outside the night before Christmas, drink all night and maybe get naked. Then in the morning we go watch the grandkids open presents and do the Santa Claus thing.
I was brought up Jewish and live in NH where they think Jews drive Cadillacs-not much diversity. Personally I have a tree-used to be fresh-cut-now I have one with lights. All I wanted was to celebrate x-mas as a child. I decorate my tree with moose, black bears and anything I want-its my tree.
After 40 years, I finally gave in and did Halloween; one time my wife entered me in a contest and I won. And our upstairs neighbor has two adorable girls who would have the best princess costumes, so we got treats for the trick-or-treaters. Do you ever think of putting a menorah in the window? One thing I know is that hard-core Christians love it when they see Jews doing Jewish stuff. That's anecdotal, of course.
