Why do TV shows always have an atheist finding 'God', especially when a loved one nearly dies?
Today's example: an old episode of Grey's Anatomy where Jackson prays for ex-wife, April, to not die ... and she doesn't. Of course, extraordinary medical interventions, and refusal to stop CPR, by close friends of hers, actually saved her life. Jackson, previously a loudly declared atheist, much to devout believer April's consternation, then drops into the hospital's chapel ... to acknowledge & thank God.
I know it's only a storyline; but, in which primetime TV series & movies does a believer rightfully & logically reject religion, in the face of overwhelming circumstances?
Well like 70% of this country believes in angels, so how surprising is all that, really?
Well there certainly is license for creativity ( not that creativity has much to do with tv), don’t underestimate the power of the almighty...dollar that is....
Religion has a boat load of cash, and a vested interest in keeping the sheep penned. The non-religious don’t have the same resources.
When I read stories like this I am reminded of the sad story of the holocaust survivor who lost his faith in god at a death camp. TV tends to avoid those stories, of which there are many.
Which immediately begs the question "Which god?" thereby showing that even complete imbeciles can direct and produce TV shows.
Must be Odin, he’s the only one capable of doing anything....
There is no dividing line between popular culture and religion, in fact religion is very much just a marketable product like every other one.
And just as the fact that, when one socially hopeless young man, discovers that the product he was sold, does not make him devastatingly attractive to the opposite sex, like the advert says. Will not stop the marketing people using that ploy, again and again, because they know that there are plenty more socially hopeless and naive young men out there. So the growth of sceptical culture, will not stop them marketing religion for every dollar they can get out of its victims.
I’ve said it before, but Miracle Workers was great, imo. God was right there in the plot but he was, well, like a human.
The angels knew he existed, but did they believe in him? Not really, he wasn’t really interested in doing a good job, just coming up with the next idea.
Apparently there’s a movie called, ‘Signs’ too where a priest loses his faith.
The plot of the movie Signs ... ultimate return to faith!! (Also having sci-fi alien invasion, would make it a problematic example... if it weren't an example if the complete opposite!)
Miracle Workers is not a near-to-life scenario, either. Angel and God characters in a purely fictional set-up. Belief, & suspension of belief in reality, aren't useful examples of conversion to Atheism.
@LizZyG you made no indication that you were looking for real life examples you think the show you’re citing is more real to life? Ok then
