Students at North Carolina’s Lake Norman Charter School can continue to read a controversial book of poetry in English class, thanks to this week’s ruling from a federal district court.
The book in question is The Poet X Elizabeth Acevedo, a coming-of-age story about an Afro-Latina poet facing familial pressure to conform to cultural and religious expectations. The lawsuit arose after parents claimed the book was anti-Catholic as a result of the protagonist’s expressed doubts about her family’s religion.

And these are the same people having vapors over the Dr. Seuss estate taking a few books off the market and the makers of Mr. Potato Head trying to save a few bucks by not having to make various gendered boxes of a toy that is barely even relevant anymore. Christians have always been the largest cancel culture out there, while making the most noise if anyone points out the biases they love so much.

Many evangelicals would like to ban most poetry. NC is slowly growing up; I wonder how that would go over in Kentucky or Tennessee.
