Students at North Carolina’s Lake Norman Charter School can continue to read a controversial book of poetry in English class, thanks to this week’s ruling from a federal district court.
The book in question is The Poet X Elizabeth Acevedo, a coming-of-age story about an Afro-Latina poet facing familial pressure to conform to cultural and religious expectations. The lawsuit arose after parents claimed the book was anti-Catholic as a result of the protagonist’s expressed doubts about her family’s religion.
how are white people so damn scared of people of color?
Because they think they are gonna do the same thing to us that we did to them
And these are the same people having vapors over the Dr. Seuss estate taking a few books off the market and the makers of Mr. Potato Head trying to save a few bucks by not having to make various gendered boxes of a toy that is barely even relevant anymore. Christians have always been the largest cancel culture out there, while making the most noise if anyone points out the biases they love so much.
Yep...self-serving, smug hypocrites. Every Single One.
Sometimes ya wonder, are we still living in the 1800s?
Such is the state of this fuckin’ wacko world were living in.
Many evangelicals would like to ban most poetry. NC is slowly growing up; I wonder how that would go over in Kentucky or Tennessee.
Eventually slowly in all likelihood, but it’ll take about 20 yrs or so.
@CuddyCruiser Try 200.
@KKGator LOL Sorry I underestimated!! But Beowulf raises a good point.......and let’s not forget the country’s changing graphics as well.
