"Earlier this month, progressive lawmakers refused to withhold their votes on must-pass COVID-19 stimulus legislation until the bill included a $15 minimum wage. A few weeks later, conservative Democratic lawmakers are now threatening to withhold their votes on must-pass infrastructure legislation until the bill includes large tax cuts for the wealthy.
The contrast in tactics spotlights a decisive asymmetry in congressional politics right now: The right wing of the Democratic Party is willing to play hardball on behalf of the affluent, to the point of threatening to take down one of President Joe Biden’s signature legislative initiatives, an infrastructure and climate plan he will detail on Wednesday.
By contrast, the left wing of the party has not yet been willing to play the same kind of hardball on behalf of the working class — and that refusal ultimately helped kill a promised wage hike in the recent pandemic aid bill and could similarly imperil other progressive priorities."
Meh. Prog's are making too much of this min wage thing. Most states have an eventual $15 (which is a pathetic joke that satisfied the populations) and can yet be introduced in another or stand-alone bill in Congrress. Dem's were going to lose the entire COVID aid bill because of it so min wage had to go. Why min wage is a thing at all, when history proves that it doesn't cost jobs or anything else, is because the nation of voters are mostly conservative. Those opposing min wage are from fiscally con states, or Districts, which are socially liberal. They are voting in line with those who elect them. Not those who have nothing to say about their job. It is unnatural for someone to willingly give up their job, especially a rather unique one, that has so many benefits so I get the desire for re-election and don't try to use protecting one's job as a crime. If the population votes for them then they must be doing well enough and I accept that.
But the population's attitude has changed due to offspring. They've just recently achieved voting power over the Baby Boomers (BB's) so Congress will soon change but pol's are rather cautious about positions so haven't yet embraced the liberal side. We are in a challenger friendly time.
And progressive Dem pols wonder why the working class doesn't respect them and sees them as pussies at best and sellouts at worst....
