I think many of the below Responders are missing the point. Tho seldom embodied as envisioned, "of, by & for the people" is the essence of what the American government is meant to be. Military service sort of takes one out of that "chain of command", & I don't agree this is at all a 'Libertarian' concept. Even when 'Government' makes rules, laws, etc., it is "man" that does it & can alter or change it. This does not mean that any "man" is above the law. Otherwise you court anarchy, tho nice in imagination, unworkable in reality.
Religion was invented to rape women brainwashing boys into violence against neighbors rape their women steal their valuables.. Alleged gawds came thousands years later as immortal generals commanding armies

This is a pleasant sentiment, except... One of the primary functions of government is protection and it does this by deploying military forces. To the extent that governments challenge one another, that military is dispatched and soldiers are killed. Those soldiers rendered their service and their lives to the authority above them. I would say the meme is a pleasant, but false premise.
