Believers believe without evidence. When truth, facts, evidence, and reality confront, challenge, and prove those beliefs false, believers who will not accept the truth will react with denial, bargaining, depression, or anger.

They want their beliefs to be true and they hate anything that proves otherwise.

The US had times when some people could point to fighting wars or the New Deal. Howard Zinn's US has fully re-emerged. Now US Exceptionalism is more like Germany's, without the sense of shame.
