The wild men sort of match early Roman reports from Western Britannia about people that lived on flesh and wore skins. At one point the Romans marched an entire Legion into the Northwestern portion of the Island and vanished, something that's never happened before or since. News of the vanishing traumatized Rome so much they went into full Trump mode and built a wall, Hadrian's Wall to protect themselves from the wild Scotsmen.
