we are part of mother nature, and we function as nature dictates, to a destiny not of our choice or design but to what nature allows. who can say that extinction is not the normal way !?!

‘Modern man’ is the evolutionary culmination of intelligent life on this planet. Having acquired self awareness comes responsibility. We’re part of a lineage that included some extremely successful ‘cousins.’ And though massive and terrifying creatures had come before, their ultimate demise was no fault of their own...

Chances are great that we’ll be the cause of our demise, though it’s unlikely all humans will be eliminated. It’s difficult to predict though interesting to imagine our ‘post apocalyptic’ status. After further evolutionary dead ends from the remaining pockets of humanity, ‘something’ may evolve with superior capabilities to our own, thus a better chance of carrying our genes into the future...

I think that the self-induced extinction of the human species is a real possibility. Genetics, bioengineering, nuclear physics, etc. are dangerous games that humans are playing already.

For one example, consider the continuing situation with the Fukushima, Japan nuclear plant that was destroyed in the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The plant is still releasing tons of highly radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean daily. If the Pacific ecosystem is destroyed or seriously disrupted, that could have serious consequences for humans.

And humans are a warlike species - look at the huge nuclear weapons arsenals that the superpowers have. A nuclear holocaust is a possibility, and might spell the end of mankind, although I think it's more likely that some humans would remain and mutate into...who knows what? And, with bioengineering and genetic engineering, biological warfare is a danger that could potentially wipe out mankind.

It's impossible to say "how long" it might be before we cause our own extinction- but it could be anytime in the future.
