Officials said that passengers failed to intervene when a woman was raped on a train close to Philadelphia, The New York Times reported.
Late Wednesday, a woman was approached by a man on a train who attempted to touch her several times. Despite the woman's attempts to stop the man from inappropriately touching her, he ultimately took off her clothes and raped her, officials said.
(This is a demonstration of how everybody leaves it up to everybody else to intervene, to the point that nobody intervenes. I believe the psychological term is "Diffusion of responsibility." )
Everybody's afraid of getting hurt. Jump in to help someone and get either physically hurt or in trouble with the law for something they discover as a result or with society in a virile video if something doesn't go as you intended it to. Look how technology is helping! It's making us scared little mice. This was true of society before cell phones, though, as well so technology is making worse a human condition.
It's a sign of the times. Less and less people give a fuck about there fellow person. Which is really sad.
It is sort of a repeat of a rape in Central Park, NY, which took place in the 1960's, where over 40 people heard a woman screaming as she was raped, but nobody called the police. Everyone questioned said they thought somebody else would call.
Reading about that affected me. If I see a crime I report it. If I see a fire, I call it in.
Civilization, or society, is only "safe" if the people in a society and/or community participate in helping to keep it safe.
