Umbra Latin for a shade, hence Umbrella something that gives a small amount of shade often seen as a sign of wealth and authority in ancient Rome. Overtaken by the new Latin word Parasol in the 16th century (Para defense, sol= sun)
The Waterproof Umbrella "invented" in 1750 by Jonas Hathaway, who "discovered it" being used in Africa by tribal nobles during monsoons again as a sign of authority and brought the design back to London and made a fortune by reintroducing the old word as rain-umbrella.
