South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster urged his state Department of Education this week to remove a book about gender identity from school shelves, calling it "obscene and pornographic," and to "investigate" similar content.
The award-winning book in question, "Gender Queer: A Memoir," chronicles nonbinary author Maia Kobabe's journey of self-identity but is being challenged for its graphic illustrations of LGBTQ sexual experiences.
McMaster, a Republican, sent a letter to Department of Education Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman on Wednesday, asking her to investigate how the illustrated book ended up at a public high school in Fort Mill, South Carolina, and to "prevent" similar books from becoming available in the state's school libraries.
Henry McMaster needs to learn to stop foisting his intolerant homophobic anti-sexual attitudes on everybody else.
Damned if he wants kids to understand themselves or other kids who are different from themselves. He wants a return to the good old days, when kids who acted different were bullied mercilessly to either conform or commit suicide.
Conservatives persist in believing they can control people's minds by restricting their access to the idea of sex, gender, race, freedom, religion, or any other concepts they consider evil. Fortunately, thought isn't so easily contained. Unfortunately, their vile methods cause severe pain, and even death, to a great number of people.
