How do we as a modern, global society educate adults to keep up with our modern world? Adults' fear of the complex and unfamiliar science they never encountered in their school days may contribute to their willingness to resign themselves to the 'easy answers' of religion. No matter how well we educate today's kids, today's voters and decision-makers are adults who will never benefit directly from changes in the ways we educate kids. Unless we can work out ways to develop adult education for science, math, history, and whatever other subjects they need to really understand what is going on in the world, many adults will find religion easier to accept than rational, fact based world-views.
I've always understood that we live in a society where you have the right to be ignorant. People will always drag their feet to learn something new if they think they understand exactly how the world came to be. Just because you and I wanted to understand, doesn't mean everyone else does.
